Welcome to the Australian Orthopaedic
Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS)

Your feet are perhaps one of the most complex parts of your body. They work incredibly hard, in most cases without much attention being paid to them until something goes wrong.

Feet provide support to the entire body to enable us to walk. Each foot is made up of 52 bones, 66 joints, 19 muscles and a system of more than 100 tendons, ligaments, muscles, blood vessels and nerves.

On average, a person’s feet will carry them on a journey of approximately 128,000 kilometres in a lifetime – the equivalent of a journey three times around the world.

Our feet absorb nearly two times our body weight during normal walking and up to four times our body weight when we are jogging.

So, given the pressure we put on our feet, it’s not surprising that sometimes medical problems arise.

This website has been developed to provide balanced, practical and credible information on a range of the more common medical topics related to feet. It has been developed by the experts in foot and ankle treatment.

The Australian Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society is the professional body for orthopaedic surgeons. They specialise in the diagnosis, care and treatment of musculo-skeletal problems of the feet and ankles. This includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and nerves.

This website provides general information only and does not replace the need to see a doctor.
